My review will follow the publisher’s blurb.
Packed with creative ideas, step-by-step projects, and endless inspiration, Art on the Rocks offers a colorful, modern approach to rock painting. Following an overview of how to gather and prepare your rocks, as well as a basic review of the tools and materials necessary for each project, three talented rock-painting artists demonstrate a range of contemporary designs featuring patterns, animals, mandalas, and more. Each project includes easy-to-follow instructions and invites creativity and originality, encouraging readers to sit back, relax, and develop their own unique Art on the Rocks.
I’ve seen these all over the internet and I’ve always wanted to give rock painting a try. I love inexpensive crafts that are also beautiful and easy to do with the kids. Rocks are the perfect, inexpensive canvas for trial and error.
Another reason I love the idea of painting on rocks with all these mandala type designs is that instead of only having a piece of paper as the final project (and believe me, I have soooooo much paper art project from the kids I don’t know where to put them all!), I have a tangible piece of art that can be put in a rock garden or I can leave somewhere for someone else to find. Even more, this seems quite meditative and relaxing – I need more of that in my life.
Art on the Rocks is well designed and I particularly loved the section on rock choosing and prepping. Even if you are artistically challenged, this book covers basic designs as well as more intricate patterns. If you can paint between the lines, then you can do this.
– Excellent color photos
– Step by step instructions
– Additional tips and tricks
I’m not a very good free form drawer (I probably am, but I criticize myself too much) and a light bulb went off when I saw the artist make use of trace paper. Absolutely brilliant !
Slip this book into a gift basket with some of the supplies listed in the beginning of the book and it makes the perfect gift for young or older crafters !
I’ve given the tips and techniques a try and these are the results. I’m quite happy with how these turned out and I’ll be doing it again soon. I’ll be leaving these out in the wild for curious eyes to find !
A copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Beautiful! Where did you get the paint markers? I’d love to do this craft with my niece.
