Lost In The Rain

Having been given an advance proof copy of this book but the publisher, Century, I was asked to give my thoughts by our host here, Rain. How could I refuse an opportunity to share with such a delightful group of readers as the audience here? So strap yourself in for a review of a glorious geeky book and the fanboy joy that it gave me.

With an unusual setting such as an insect farm and a fascinating set of characters, Stuart Prebble gives us an original and reflective novel to ponder on, long after you’ve put it down.

What She Left is brought to the reader through texts, letters, emails, excerpts … it is the piecing together of the death of Alice Salmon by one of her former professors Dr. Jeremy Cooke, anthropologist. Dr. Cooke is publishing a book on the death of Alice and through his findings we meet people from Alice’s past and present as well as secrets from the researcher himself. It’s a tangled little web of infidelity, family secrets, dreams and desire.

This colorful book is a wonderful reminder that Math is all around us. My young reader wanted to dive into it right away. She loved the big beautiful illustrations ! I must admit, I loved to read some of the poems out loud to her, I don’t know who had more fun ?!

Where do fairy tales end and where does reality begin. Frederik Backman gives us an intensely woven story set in the Land of Almost-Awake and within the real world. In each we meet monsters, dragons, shadows, superheroes, princesses and their princes. As you go through the book, you’ll find out how the land of almost awake and the real world are connected.

If you live on planet earth, more particularly in Canada… you should read this book.  If you have investments in the TSX, interested in politics or the environment.. again, you should read this book.
